Iolanta, Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg 28. Sep 2009

The opening of the 227th season of the Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg, has been done on 28. September 2009 with Tchaikovsky's last opera "Iolanta", starring the opera diva Anna Netrebko in the title role and Valery Gergiev conducting the Chorus and Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater.

The rest of the cast was coming also from the Mariinsky Theater with Sergei Skorokhodov as Vaudémont, Sergei Aleksashkin as René, Alexei Markov as Robert and Edem Umerov as Ebn-Hakia, Andrei Zorin as Alméric, Fyodor Kuznetsov as Bertrand, Natalia Evstafieva as Martha, the young Ukranian soprano Eleonora Vindau as Brigitte and the young Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Sergeeva as Laura. Then, finally, the cast has been almost the same one of the premiere in Baden-Baden on 18. July 2009, with the only difference being Sergei Skorokhodov, instead of Piotr Beczala, as Vaudémont. The stage director was Mariusz Treliński and it was a co-production of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.

After the performance, Anna Netrebko was entitled as Honorary Doctor of the Institude for Children’s Traumathology. Anna received a golden scalpel and a medal for the financial support made under the title/motto: “For saving children’s life”.

The premiere of this production, in a double program "Aleko" and "Iolanta", was performed at the Mariinsky Theater on 17. and 18. April 2009. A few months later, then with Anna Netrebko making her role debut as Iolanta, Piotr Beczala as Vaudémont and Valery Gergiev conducting the Chorus and Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater, was performed at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden on 18., 21., 24. and 27. Reports
Herbert attended the concert in Stockholm and kindly wrote the following report for the blog:
The evening began with a funny "accident". During the first duet, the heel of Anna's right shoe was stuck in a hole in the stage floor! She slipped out of the shoe, and when she bowed at the end she tried to pull the heel out of the hole, which was not easy. The people began to laugh and she had to laugh too. Massimo Giordano was a gentleman. He picked up the shoe and helped Anna to slip in again. When she returned for her next song, she was barefoot - and she stayed so the whole evening!

Anna was in top form again. Sometimes she turned her back to the audience and looked at the people who sat behind the orchestra. When she sang "Il bacio" and "Meine Lippen...", she danced on the stage and made the audience cheer. In part 2 and during the encores the Stockholm audience rose for standing ovations.

I saw several microphones on the stage and hanging down above the orchestra, so I think the concert must have been recorded. We should have a look at the Swedish radio programmes!

After the performance Anna came out at the stage door, where a van was waiting for her. But she stopped and gave some autographs and posed for photos. She did not stay too long, however, because it was cold outside. When the car began to move she waved to the people standing outside.
Britta attended also the concert and she told me about another funny incident what happened:
During "Caro Elisir sei mio" Anna sat on one of the empty chairs of the trumpet players and flipped through the notes while Massimo was singing. Then, some notes fell down and she looked like: Ups, putting them back with a smile!

Press Reports
Forget the DVD, Blue-ray, Home Theater and Dolby-super-bass, no representation will ever be close to live performances like these. You have just to catch my breath after the concert. And anyone who thought that Netrebko was the evening's sole star, now know that Massimo Giordano is one of the top singers. [...] Netrebko is characterized not only by her strength and presence, she has an elasticity and warmth in her voice that makes it difficult to defend oneself against.

Anna Netrebko and Massimo Giordano, Radiohusets Koncertsal, Copenhagen 18. Sep 2009

The Russian-Austrian soprano Anna Netrebko and the Italian tenor Massimo Giordano started the Scandinavian Concert Tour at the Radiohusets Koncertsal of Copenhagen on 18. Sep 2009, Anna's birthday date. Maestro Emmanuel Villaume conducted the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR.

This is the first time that Anna Netrebko sings in Copenhagen and the tickets for the concert were sold-out in just 14 minutes, despite the fact that the concert was not advertised at all. This can give a good idea of the great expectation existing to see Anna Netrebko in Copenhagen.

First impressions say that the concert was fantastic. The programme, with some slight variations with respect to what it had been announced, included famous works, arias and duets, from Gounod, Verdi and Donizetti in the first part of the concert and Arditi, Tosti, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Puccini in the second part. After a first encore with Massimo singing "Core'ngrato" by Cardillo, Anna came on stage and the audience start to sing a touching "Happy Birthday, dear Anna". As a second encore, Anna sang "Meine Lippen, sie kussen so heiss" from "Giuditta". The last encore was the "Brindisi" from "La Traviata" sang by Anna Netrebko and Massimo Giordano. The concert ended with a standing ovation.

The Radiohusets Koncertsal of Copenhagen is a brand new building designed by Jean Nouvel which was inaugurated in January 2009 with a tv broadcast gala.

The Scandinavian Concert Tour of Anna Netrebko and Massimo Giordano with the maestro Emmanuel Villaume will continue with a concerts at the Oslo Konserthuset in Oslo on 21. Sep 2009 and at the Konserthuset in Stockholm on 24. Sep 2009. It will be also the first time that Anna Netrebko sings in Oslo and Stockholm and, needless to say, that there is also a great expectation to see Anna for first time in those cities.

The concert announced as "Vivo! An Evening with Anna Netrebko and Massimo Giodano" has been held at the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum on 13. Sep 2009. Maestro Emmanuel Villaume conducted the Duisburger Philharmoniker.

The concert has been organized within the Ruhrtriennale 2009 Festival which runs from 15. Aug 2009 to 11. Oct 2009, as part of the Ruhrtriennale 2009-2011 directed by Willy Decker. This has been the first appearance of Anna Netrebko at a Ruhrtriennale and tickets for the concert were sold out in just 4 hours!

A general rehearsal, with the Duisburger Philharmoniker, the maestro and the two soloist took place on the afternoon of Saturday 12. Sep 2009 at 17:00. After a rehearsal of the overture of Nabucco, the Russian-Austrian soprano Anna Netrebko and the Italian tenor Massimo Giordano came on stage. Matthias Bruns, spokesman and 2nd violin, describes how it was the rehearsal and his impressions about the soloist and the maestro in dacapo-dp.de, the weblog of the Duisburger Philharmoniker.

Today, since 2 hours before the concert starts, the WebTeam of the weblog of the Duisburger Philharmoniker was already on site and providing initial and live insights via Twitter from the scene of the events. They have been providing an excellent minute to minute coverage of the event, submitting information about what was going on on stage and some pictures including a programme signed by Massimo Giordano and, at the end of the concert, a photo of Anna Netrebko and a photo of them with Anna Netrebko.

Anna Netrebko attended a BMW Meet and Greet event after the concert.
