Breaking News: Anna Netrebko cancels the last two performances of I Capuleti e I Montecchi in München

The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced that due to health reasons Anna Netrebko has cancelled the last two performances of the run of Bellini's I Capuleti e I Montecchi on 23. and 26. May 2012. Netrebko will be substituted by Eri Nakamura.

I liked tonight's show even more than the first one last Saturday, because the audience was more spontaneous and enthusiastic. There were not so many "posh" people who just wanted to be seen, but real opera enthusiasts or "afficionados".

Anna's voice and her choreography especially in the second scene of the first act were adorable. This scene completely belonged to her, and the love duet with her Romeo / Vesselina Kasarova was one of the highlights of the opera. Although she had just a few days for rehearsals, Anna plays and sings this role as if there had been several weeks of rehearsing. She's a phenomenon!

Today there were six microphones at the stage edge, so there might be a radio recording coming up!

At the stage door Anna appeared in a summer dress (although it was quite fresh tonight), and she spent a lot of time for autographs and photos, until Erwin Schrott came in. Anna then said: "Oh, I have to go" - and they went to a taxi waiting outside.

Everybody who can watch the live stream next Saturday on should not miss it at all!!

The first of five performances of "I Capuleti e i Montecchi" at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich was a triumph for the two protagonists Anna Netrebko and Vesselina Kasarova. But the male singers - Dimitri Pittas (Tebaldo), Ante Jerkunica (Capellio), Paul Gay (Lorenzo) - and the musical director Yves Abel as well as the chorus deserved a lot of applause, too.

Anna, in a short white opulent dress (created by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix) and with long dark hair, looked and played like the 15-year-old girl she had to embody. Director Vincent Boussard asked a lot of her. For example she had to sing while she was balancing on a wash basin (the only weird idea in this production), but she mastered everything! Her voice was fabulous, and I always wonder how she can switch to sing a whole opera after the concert in Baden-Baden and the two Russian recitals in Paris and Vienna. Anyway, "yes, she can"!

A funny scene at curtain calls: When Anna left the stage, she didn't walk, but ballet danced like in "Swan Lake".

The Bayerische Staatsoper has already announced the new 2011-2012 season.

Anna Netrebko will return to the Bayerische Staatsoper to sing the role of Giulietta in Bellini's "I Capuleti e I Montecchi". The rest of the cast features Vesselina Kasarova as Romeo, Dimitri Pittas as Tebaldo, Diogenes Randes as Capellio and Paul Gay as Lorenzo. The production is directed by Vincent Boussard. The conductor is Yves Abel.

Performances run from 12. May to 26 May 2012.

This Saturday BBC 3 will broadcast I Capuleti e I Montecchi from the Royal Opera House

This coming Saturday 6. June at 18.00 BST (19:00 CET), BBC Radio 3 will broadcast the performance of Bellini's I Capuleti e I Montecchi that was recorded on 7. April 2009 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, starring Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca as Romeo and Russian soprano Anna Netrebko as Giulietta. Mark Elder conducts the Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

Presented by Donald Macleod with opera historian Sarah Lenton. If you cannot listen at that time it will be available for the following seven days to listen on the BBC iPlayer.

Personal Report
Yesterday I attended the last performance of the sold-out run of I Capuleti e I Montecchi at the ROH with Elina Garanca as Romeo and Anna Netrebko as Giulietta.

When the best Romeo meet on the stage the best Giulietta, the result can not be other than a smashing unforgetteable performance. Both Anna and Elina were absolutely stunning, with beautiful, wide and powerful voices, able to come across a dense mass of orchestral music and chorus with incredible ease. When they were together on the stage, their voices were matching perfectly each other. But it was not just the voices, it was also a perfect chemistry between them on the stage.

Let me share with all of you something that Rhodri, a regular blog reader who attended several performances of this run, told me. Every time Anna or Elina have been singing during this run, the whole of the chorus have been standing in the wings listening and when Anna and Elina were singing together there wasn't any space to be found backstage at all!! They have loved every minute of Anna and Elina singing. This, I think, is the greatest compliment a chorus can give to other singers.

Maestro Mark Elder conducted the Orchestra ad Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The production by Pier Luigi Pizzi was simple but effective, with a series of columns as main architectural element and playing with the lights in an effective manner. The fight scenes between the Capuleti and the Montecchi were also very good.

Last night of the run, and quite wonderful to experience again, not least because both Garança and Netrebko were both in sovereign voice and made an absolute six-course meal of Act I, scene ii. Golden Age singing, in fact, irrespective of when that Golden Age would notionally be placed. Singing of this quality would always have qualified, and amidst so much ridiculous hot air lately about deafening, graceless tenors that shook the world - or rather Manhattan - which is in some spurious nonsensical way designed solely to disbar those who either weren't there, or even born, from having an opinion on the subject, it's heartening to realise that there's a golden age going on right now, right in front of us.

April 2009. Anna sings today the last performance of the second run of I Capuleti e I Montecchi, partnered by Elina Garanca. This monday is the premiere of Il Trovatore with a top cast including Roberto Alagna as Manrico, Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Count di Luna, Sondra Radvanovsky as Leonora and Malgorzata Walewska as Azucena. It's a production of Elijah Moshinsky and Carlo Rizzi is the conductor.
