Anna Netrebko will make her role debut in Eugene Onegin at the Wiener Staatsoper on 12. Apr 2013

The star soprano Anna Netrebko will make her eagerly awaited role debut as Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's masterpiece Eugene Onegin at the Wiener Staatsoper on 12. April 2013. Baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky will sing the title role. Dmitry Korchak will be Lensky and Stephanie Houtzeel will be Olga. On the podium Andris Nelsons.

Four shows are scheduled on 12., 15., 18. and 22. April 2013.

Deutsche Grammophon releases the album "Anna Netrebko - Live at the Metropolitan Opera".

The CD, which will be released on 16. Sep 2011, includes works by Prokofiev, Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Gounod, Offenbach and Puccini.

Anna Netrebko sings with top opera singers such as Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Juan Diego Florez, Roberto Alagna, Joseph Calleja and Piotr Beczala.

Valery Gerviev, Sylvain Cambreling, Placido Domingo and James Levine conduct the Metroplitan Opera Orchestra.

Live At The Met features excerpts from live performances on the Met stage from La Boheme, Don Giovanni, War &Peace, I Puritani, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Romeo etJuliette, Don Pasquale and Lucia di Lammermoor.

Breaking News - Anna Netrebko in "Eugene Onegin" next season at the Wiener Staatsoper

Austrian magazine News has just announced that Anna Netrebko will make her role debut as Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" next season at the Wiener Staatsoper.

We still have to confirm if Dmitri Hvorostovsky will sing the title role as it had been pointed out recently by the young russian tenor Dmitry Korchak in an interview to the french newspaper "La Dépêche".  Asked about his favorite roles Korchak said that among his future projects it was a "Eugene Onegin" at the Wiener Staatsoper with Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

Today's edition of the french newspaper La Dépêche publishes an interview to the young russian tenor Dmitry Korchak who is scheduled to make his debut at the Théâtre du Capitole, Toulouse on 18. Mar 2011 as Il Conte d'Almaviva in Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia".

Asked about his favorite roles Korchak said that among his future projects there is a "Eugene Onegin" at the Wiener Staatsoper with Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

Anna Netrebko returns to USA

After a stunning concert with Dmitri Hvorostovsky at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 18. January 2010, a pretty much unnoticed performance of La Bohème at the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg on 21. Jan 2010 and her appearance at the 2009 German Media Award in Baden-Baden on 9. February 2010, Anna Netrebko returns to the United States of America for a series of performances of La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, with Anna Netrebko as Mimi and Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo, starting on 20. February and running till 20. March 2010, and an Evening of Tchaikovsky Opera’s Scenes in Concert, with the Mariinksy Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on 4. March 2010.

Finally Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky gave their very much eagerly awaited concert at the Royal Festival Hall, London on Monday 18. January 2010.

The concert had been initially scheduled at the Royal Festival Hall, London on 19. May 2009, but unfortunately, Anna Netrebko got sick and the concert was cancelled.

The first part of the programme included arias and duets by Wagner, Strauss, Gounod and Leoncavallo and orchestral works by Rossini, Berlioz and Leoncavallo. The second part included arias and duets by Arditi, Verdi, Dvořák and Tchaikovsky and orchestral works by Verdi and Tchaikovsky. A slight change in the second part of the programme was made with respect to the announced and printed one, starting with Arditi's "Il Bacio" followed by the Overure of Verdi's "La forza del destino". Two encores were given. Anna sang "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss" from Lehar's Giuditta and Dmitri sang the Russian folk song Russian folk song: "Ochi chornyje" (Dark Eyes).

The accoustic of the Royal Festival Hall was very good. Anna and Dmitri sang together only twice, the duet of Nedda and Silvio from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci and the final duet scene from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, being the two highlights of the concert. Aside of the duets, anothers highlights of the performance were when Anna drove us, once again, to the heaven singing "O silver moon", from Dvorak's Rusalka and Dmitri sang the Yelensky's aria from Tcahikovsky's The Queen of Spades. The concert ended with almost everyone in the Hall standing up and applauding for several minutes.

Attila's Corner
Our blog friend Attila, who has been regularly contributing to the blog with wonderful reviews, attended the concert. I got the opportunity and the pleasure to meet him at the stage door after the performance. Here it is, under the new section labeled "Attila's Corner", the review that he has kindly written for the blog:

I don't remember seeing such an international crowd at the Royal Festival Hall - most of the audience seemed to be Russians taking a break from their shopping trips. The relatively low cost of the tickets (a quarter of the price of Hamburg for example) must have attracted a lot of Europeans who can pay for the whole trip to London for less than the price of a local ticket.

Seeing Anna this evening I have finally come to the (obvious) conclusion that she is a different creature in the opera house from the one that appears in concert. On the stage she is intense and scarily dark, almost shamanistic - connecting inside herself with something almost disturbing. In the concert hall she is a creature of joy and light, wanting to keep the audience happy and laughing. This makies for a completely different experience.

This evening was about showbiz and glamour with Anna and Dimitri almost playing a sort of hard-cop soft-cop act. His arias were dark and broody, and a chance to show off his amazing breath technique with some beautiful crescendos on the climactic notes. Her arias were mostly the light seductive ones we have become familiar with from her concerts, touching on the dramatic only in her the duets.

The Philharmonia played really well with most of the orchestral interludes tastefully programmed to connect with the arias that followed.

Dimitri was the first to appear, looking like a rock star in black tie and cuban heels - finishing every aria with a huge smile, He sang Wolfram's aria with his usual wonderful open throated purring tone.

Anna followed looking very glamourous, with a green (emerald?) ring that was as big as an egg, in what looked like a new dress, off the shoulder - very sexy. Cäcilie is one of Anna's favourites. She delivered it energetically with blooming top notes (slightly pushed) - but maybe sung a little less precisely than I have heard her sing it before.

Dimitri sung his aria from the Faust sequence with real bravura - wonderful strength, and very nice crescendos on the big notes. Anna followed with the Jewel song, again it was full of youth and vitality but for me lacked the necessary precision.

The Pagliacci duet was much better, with Anna floating the sound, and getting more into the words. The two of them creating a wonderful intimacy.

Anna walked on for the second half in a very glamourous pink evening gown - which got a gasp from the audience, She placed Arditi's "Il bacio" ahead of the announced Forza del Destino overture presumably to begin with something light. Again it was a performance based around the high "money" notes, and maybe lacking her usual precision in the lower voice.

But it was the last few numbers that really raised the level of the evening. Anna sang Rusalka's mournful aria with the wonderful melting tone that is her hallmark and with a wonderful finish.

This was followed by the real singing lesson of the evening - Dimitri singing Yeletsky's aria. Hvorostovsky performances of this aria must be one of the best pieces of singing in the world today. Last year, he almost stole the Met Centennial Gala with it, and there can be no better example today of an artist at the top of his art than this; stylish, precise, emotionally intense.

The highlight of the evening was the last item - the final scene from Eugene Onegin. Anna re-entered the stage in full character, and suddenly we saw what we had been missing until now; that intense inward character portrayal, the masterful colouring of words. We had a pause from opera as circus, and returned to opera as intense emotional drama. Everything about her singing was better including the vocal placement in the lower voice. She says the role is not for her voice, but I can't wait for her to eventually do the full opera at the Met. Something happens to her singing that's almost transcendental when she stops focusing on the audience and goes into her own internal space.

There were just two encores, Anna led with another of her old favourites, Meine Lippen sie küssen so heiss - very seductive and she almost set the stage on fire when she went off into a wild dance behind the orchestra. Maybe she should try Salome!

And Dimitri finally softened his macho toughness with "Ochi chornyje" (Dark eyes). It seemed unbelievable that they didn't come back to do some more encores!

Afterwards Anna was on her own at the artists' entrance tirelessly hugging everyone and letting them take photos with her, she looked fantastic in a wonderful red velvet dress. All this joy must be exhausting for her.

We are approaching the end of the first decade of the new century. I have prepared a list of what I could pick as the top-10 Anna Netrebko's performances of the decade. It has not been an easy task. Some of them are a clear choice for me, some others could be at a different position in the rank and there are others left, such as the performances of Manon in Los Angeles, Wien and Berlin, Don Giovanni in London, La Bohème in New York and Munich, which could have been added... but here it is my choice. Metropolitan Opera Announces Three Week Tour To Japan From May 30 to June 20, 2011

The Metropolitan Opera announced plans today to return to Japan for a three-week tour in June 2011, presenting 13 performances of three fully staged operas in Tokyo and Nagoya. The operas will include Puccini’s La Bohème and Verdi’s Don Carlo, both conducted by Met Music Director James Levine, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda.

Star singers include Ildar Abdrazakov, Piotr Beczala, Olga Borodina, Joseph Calleja, Diana Damrau, Dmitri Hvorostovky, Jonas Kaufmann, Mariusz Kwiecien, Željko Lučić, Anna Netrebko and René Pape.

Performances will begin on June 4 at the Aichi Prefectural Arts Center in Nagoya with La Bohème, starring Anna Netrebko, Susanna Phillips, Piotr Beczala and Mariusz Kwiecien. Piotr Beczala and Joseph Calleja will share the roles of Rodolfo in La Bohème and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor.

This will be the Met’s seventh tour to Japan; the first was in 1975 and the most recent was in 2006. The tour is being presented by the Japan Arts Corporation of Tokyo and the Crown Sponsor is KDDI. Anna Netrebko was in four performances of Mozart's Don Giovanni of the 2006 Met Tour to Japan, with a strong cast starring Anna Netrebko as Donna Anna, Erwin Schrott as Don Giovanni, Matthew Polenzani as Don Ottavio, Melanie Diener as Donna Elvira, René Pape as Leporello, Magdalena Kozena as Zerlina and Jonathan Lemalu as Masetto.

Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky had to give a concert at the Royal Festival Hall, London on 19. May 2009. Unfortunately, Anna Netrebko was ill at this date and the concert was cancelled. It was announced to ticket holders that they would try to get a new date for the concert. Today the new date has been announced.

Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky will give a concert at the Royal Festival Hall, London on Monday 18. January 2010. The programme includes arias and duets by Donizetti, Dvořák, Gounod, Leoncavallo, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Wagner.

Tickets go on sale to ticket holders for the cancelled concert on Monday 14. September 2009. Then they go on sale to Southbank members on Wednesday 16. September and then on General sale on Friday 18. September.

Klassik Open-Air Konzert, Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Königsplatz, München 10. Jul 2009

Russian soprano Anna Netrebko and Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky performed yesterday night at the Klassik Open-air concert, at the Königsplatz of München, in front of 13 000 people, for 2 and a half hours. The two artists were accompanied by the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg conducted by Valery Gergiev.

The first part of the exciting evening concert was exclusively devoted to Russian composers, with arias and duets from operas and works by Mikhail Glinka (Ruslan and Lyudmila) and Piotr Tchaikovsky (Pique Dame, Eugene Onegin and Iolanta). The Russian tenor Sergei Skorokhodov joined Anna Netrebko on the stage for the duet of Iolanta.

After the interval, the second part of the concert included arias, duets and works by German and Italian composers: Richard Wagner (Tannhäuser), Richard Strauss (Cäcilie), Giuseppe Verdi (Il Trovatore), Giacomo Puccini (Madama Butterfly), Pietro Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Ruggiero Leoncavallo (Pagliacci).

Anna Netrebko, who had sung for the first time ever the Cio-Cio-San monologue of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Mariinsky Gala on 5. July 2009, sang once again this aria at the Königsplatz in München, being one of the highlights of the evening.

Reached its climax, as encores, Anna Netrebko sang the aria "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss" from Franz Lehár's operetta "Giuditta" and Dmitri Hvorostovsky sang the Russian folk song "Ochi chornyje".

At the end, standing ovations for Anna Netrebko, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Valery Gergiev.

The Königsplatz is such a large area. But with its neo-classicistic "Greek" buildings on three sides it is a very effectful place. There was no rain, but it was bitterly cold. That is why Robert Braunmüller called his first short review of the first part of the concert "Die Eisheilige" - "The Saint of Ice". - And maybe therefore quite a number of people stood up 10 minutes before the end of the official programme (!!) and started moving towards the exits - which was very stupid and impolite. Another newspaper, BILD, says: "We are all ill today, but it was worth it."

In the first half Anna wore her beautiful red dress as in St. Petersburg, and in the second half it was the same as in Braunschweig: a silver top and a long black skirt. - She looked marvellous, and again she seemed to have lost a few pounds. (I think it was due to the terrible costumes why she looked a bit plump as Violetta in SF).

The programme was similiar, but not completely the same as in Braunschweig. It was very demanding and ambitious, but I think Valery Gergiev is nobody for a light-hearted "summer concert" with all the popular melodies everybody can do. So it was completely Russian in the first half, and in the second part we heard Anna sing "Un bel dì vedremo" for the first time. I think this was one of the highlights of the evening. Oh yes, Madama Butterfly could be one of Anna's next roles. Her voice is in top form.

Robert Braunmüller writes about Anna: "In the final scene of 'Eugene Onegin' La Netrebko was compelling again by her art of outlinig a character with a few gestures and giving it a colour of its own by her voice."

Anna's encore was one of her favourites, "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss" - with her vivacious dance (barefoot!) in the middle. When Dmitri sang his encore, Anna seemed to have forgotten that she had to perform her gipsy dance around him, as she did in Braunschweig. Shortly before the end she really ran out from behind - with skirts up - and made only a few movements before she kneeled down in front of Dmitri as in Braunschweig.

Today's newspaper TZ publishes an article about tomorrow's Open-Air Concert of Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, with the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev, at the Könisgplatz in München.

Press Conference of Anna Netrebko at the Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel in München

Today, Anna Netrebko has attended a press conference at the Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel in München to promote the "Classic Open Air" concert which will take place at Königsplatz, München on 10. July 2009. The opera diva will share the stage with the Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Valery Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus.

Anna talked about her return to the stage after giving birth to her son Tiago on 5. September 2008. "My voice has become bigger, as my body," she said in Munich. Tiago does not cause any problems when they are travelling around the world. It is easy when Erwin (who was also present) is with her, but when he has to perform, she gets help of a Russian "nanny".

She said she is looking forward to the open air concert in München on 10. July with baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky and with one of her best friends, conductor Valery Gergiev and the St Petersburg Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre. It is expected that they will sing the final scene of Eugene Onegin.

Another question was what she does to prevent damage from her voice. She answered: "The most important thing is: Do not sing too much." But sometimes it is difficult to refuse an engagement.

Breaking News!!! Anna Netrebko has withdrawn from tomorrow's concert at the Royal Festival Hall

Blogger Intermezzo has just posted the breaking news! Unfortunately, Anna Netrebko is suffering from influenza and has today withdrawn from the concert at the Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday 19 May 2009. The Southbank Centre has published the following note:

We are sorry to announce that Anna Netrebko is suffering from influenza and has today withdrawn from the concert at the Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday 19 May 2009. At such short notice, it has not been possible to offer an alternative programme with Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Ion Marin, and so regretfully, the performance tomorrow will not take place. We are working to identify an alternative date for the concert in the future months and patrons will have been notified of any rescheduled date by Friday 29 May. Patrons will be offered the option of transferring their ticket, in the event of a rescheduled date, or obtaining a full refund. Patrons wishing to obtain an immediate refund may also do so. Please contact Southbank Centre’s Ticket Office on 0871 663 2500. Raymond Gubbay Limited and Southbank Centre apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The Southbank Centre has sent the following email to ticketholders

We are writing to inform you of the arrangements for ticketholders following the recent cancellation of the performance by Anna Netrebko, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Ion Marin on 19 May 2009.

We are as yet unable to confirm a rescheduled date for the performance and as a result we will now be refunding all ticket holders via their original method of payment, refunds should be with you in the next 14 days. Please note, tickets will be refunded to the original purchaser only. If the tickets were purchased by credit or debit card, the refund will be made directly to this account. If tickets were purchased using cash or cheque, a refund will be made by cheque.

You do not need to return any tickets to us. Southbank Centre will retain your details on file and provide all original ticketholders with advance on-sale notice regarding any rescheduled date for this performance within the 2009/10 Season. Priority booking for Southbank Centre Members will still apply.

Herbert attended the concert and wrote the following report:

The "Volkswagenhalle" seemed to be sold out yesterday - I heard that about 6.000 people were there.

The programme was a bit different from Anna's former "big" concerts in arenas etc., but it had obviously to do with her partner, baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. They both were a good match. Dmitri looked and sang like a "Siberian Ice Tiger", and Anna offered a mix of German, Italian, French and Russian arias and duets. During the evening the audience were getting more and more enthusiastic, especially after the final duet from Eugen Onegin.

I liked her aria "Regnava nel silenzio" (Lucia di Lammermoor) best, especially when she stepped aside and sang the final lines without the microphone - and there was almost no difference!

After the official end of the concert the audience stood up and didn't finish their standing ovations until Anna and Dmitri added some encores.

When Dmitri sang a Russion folk song, "Orchie Chornye" (Dark Eyes), Anna entered the stage from the left side with no shoes on and a tambourine in her hands. She accompanied him and danced like a gipsy queen - throwing herself on her knees in front of Dmitri. What an effective finale! (see photo 7 and videoclip 3).
