Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott as the Countess and Count in Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" in 2013 in Wien

Austrian magazine NEWS publishes that Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott will be together as the Countess and the Count in Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2013. Schrott, who recently got the spanish nationality, is so happy about that: "It will be like fireworks on the stage - Anna and I fighting on the stage as the Countess and the Count. We will try it fist in Baden-Baden and then in Wien".

CNN International: Anna Netrebko Revealed

On 17. November 2010 at 08:30 AM (GMT) CNN International has premiered "Anna Netrebko: Revealed"
a 23-minute long documentary about the Russian superstar soprano Anna Netrebko.

The awesome documentary is splitted into three parts and it can be seen at the CNN International website.

The first part "Anna Netrebko: The modern face of Opera" starts with Anna Netrebko in New York in October 2010. She is leaving her new appartment, located just a few blocks away from Lincoln Center, going walking to the Met. Anna is rehearsing the revival of Otto Schenk's production of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale". The film shows Anna Netrebko, Mariusz Kwiecien and John Del Carlo rehearsing backstage some scenes of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" under the precise and detailed direction of Otto Schenk.The fist part concludes with some nice images of a very young Anna in Krasnodar, some of her early performances at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and a short interview with Maestro Valery Gergiev.

The second part "Anna Netrebko: Diva turned mother" starts with Anna Netrebko in London in June 2010. She is singing the title role of a new production of Massenet's "Manon" at the Royal Opera House. The film shows Anna arriving at the stage door of the Royal Opera House and warming up the voice at her dressing room. It includes footage from her current performances of Massenet's "Manon" at the Royal Opera House and Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" at the Salzburger Festspiele 2010. The film show us also Anna as a mother, playing with her cute son Tiago or cooking at her new appartment in New York. Some other really nice moments are when Anna is refreshing some scenes of Bellini's "I Puritani" at the piano and Tiago is around there "playing" also the piano.

The third part "On stage with Anna Netrebko" starts with Anna Netrebko in Baden-Baden in July 2010. She is in a recording session of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" with Marianna Pizzolato and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under the musical direction of maestro Antonio Pappano. This recording will be released by Deutsche Grammophon in March 2011. The film reveals the cover of this upcoming CD and includes also some images of a funny photo session with Anna and Marianna held in London in June 2010. After Baden-Baden and London, the film drive us back to New York in October 2010 to show us some on-stage rehearsals and the opening of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" at the Met.

Personal Report

I have attended the second performance of the Baden-Baden Gala 2010 - Anna Netrebko on 29. July 2010. The programme, fully devoted to Giovanni Battista Pergolesi including the "Stabat Mater" and other works, was not familiar to me and baroque music was not one of my favorites styles, so I was a litlle bit unsure about how much I would enjoy the concert.

The performance started at 8:00 PM. I arrived to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden well in advance, around 6:30 PM. I bought a programme booklet and I took a look around the hall. I decided to buy a "bretzel" and a glass of champagne and I took one of the small tables with a view to the stage door, looking forward to seeing Anna's arrival to the Festspielhaus. As usual, Anna arrived just one hour before the performance started. She was looking great. Some fans were waiting for her in front of the stage door and she spent some time talking to them and signing some autographs.

The performance started and all my doubts about how much I would enjoy the performance disappeared. The music was gorgeous. The Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia - Roma conducted by Maestro Antonio Pappano sounded great. After a first Sinfonia, Marianna Pizzolato came to the stage to sing a Kantate. It was the first time I saw Marianna live and she was very good in this repertoire. After Marianna, Anna Netrebko came on stage to sing another Kantate. She was fantastic. Her voice was warm and wide in the lower registers and powerful in the high ones, filling the huge Festspielhaus.

In the second part they sang the "Stabat Mater". Wonderful music, fully of emotions. The voices of Anna and Marianna matched very well and the audience enjoyed so much the performance. Many applauses for the singers, the conductor and the orchestra at the end of the concert. As an encore, they sang again the last part of the "Stabat Mater".

It had been announced a "Meet the Artists" after the concert and a signature session by Maestro Antonio Pappano. Anna came out through the stage door where many fans were aiting for her. Erwin Schrott, who had taken a private jet to attend the concert and see her, was also there. I was talking with him for a while and he told me they had a dinner and they would leave Baden-Baden early next morning to go to Salzburg. Therefore, they were not able to attend the "Meet the Artists" event as they did Mariana Pizzolato, Antonio Pappano and the members of the Orchestra.

It was a fantastic night and fortunately the two Gala performances were recorded and Deutsche Grammophon will release a CD from those live recordings. Most likely the CD will be released previously to the Pergolesi concert tour that Anna Netrebko will give in Berlin, Munich, Paris, Geneve and Toulouse in April/May 2011.

Reports

Herbert attended the two performances of the Baden-Baden Gala 2010. This is the short report he wrote for the blog after the first performance on 27. July 2010.

The Baden-Baden gala yesterday was a great success, although I found the programme a bit short.

The first part lasted 45 minutes. First a sinfonia by the orchestra, then a “Kantate” sung by Marianna Pizzolato, and then “Nel chiuso centro” (“Orfeo”) by Anna (exactly 22 minutes, she wore a mint green long dress).

Part 2 was “Stabat mater”. In the beginning, Anna (in a long black dress) seemed to be very earnest and even a bit nervous because of this difficult part, but she and Pizzolato were great and it was a success.

As an encore they repeated the last part of “Stabat mater” and took a lot of bows, but no more encores.

About 100 people were waiting at the stage door, where Anna gave autographs etc., before she was driven away in a big limousine.

And this is the report he wrote for the blog after the second performance on 29. July 2010.

The second gala on Thursday, 29. July, was also something very special. Anna was completely relaxed when she entered the stage for "Stabat mater". She beamed with joy at the audience, twinkled at somebody whom she recognized, and when a few people wanted to applaud during "Stabat mater", she smiled "with shock" so that the audience kept quiet until the end.

The two voices of Anna and Marianna Pizzolato were in perfect harmony with the orchestra, and sometimes it was not possible to distinguish the voices from the instruments - was this Anna singing or was it a violin? Perfect beauty! Baroque music can enchant such a large hall as the Festspielhaus, when it is presented in such virtuosity. We can be looking forward to the CD recording!.

After the performance there was a "Meet the Artists" in the foyer of the Festspielhaus. Drinks, tomato soup (!) and "bretzels" were served, and we could talk to Antonio Pappano, Marianna Pizzolato and members of the orchestra, who mixed with the audience. Only Anna could not take part in this after show party, because she had to attend a dinner (together with Erwin Schrott) and she had an early flight to Salzburg next morning. I think Carlos knows more about it ;-))

Behind the Scenes, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, 2007 Baden-Baden Gala

This is the Behind the Scenes documentary film for the 2007 Baden-Baden Gala featuring Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Ramón Vargas and Ludovic Tézier with the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg conducted by Marco Armiliato.

The 2007 Baden-Baden Gala took place at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden on 28. and 31. July and 3. August 2007. The last performance on 3. August 2007 was broadcast by ZDF. A DVD of the 2007 Baden-Baden Gala was released by Deutsche Grammophon.

"Aleko" and "Iolanta", Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Baden-Baden 27. July 2009

The fourth performance of Rachmaninov's first opera "Aleko", with John Relyea in the title role, and Tchaikovsky's last opera "Iolanta", with Anna Netrebko in the title role and Piotr Beczala as Graf Vaudemont, took place on Monday 27. July 2009 at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Valery Gergiev conducted the Chorus and Orchestra of the Mariinsky Orchestra of St. Petersburg. The stage director, in a co-production by the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, was Mariusz Treliński.

Our friends Anne-Laure and Roxanne, who had previously attended the premiere and the performance on 21. July, have attended also this fourth performance. Anne-Laure has kindly written the following report for the blog:

I think that it was the best performance of the four. Anna was as usual really convincing, touching (and gorgeous)as Iolanta and vocally even more secure (better projection for example) than at the premiere. This music (a trully wonderful music. Thank you Tchaikovsky!) suits her very well and she is really inspired by it even if the role is sometimes maybe a little low for her. Her singing is like velvet for the ears.

Beczala was also very good and their duet was fabulous. Markov was good too. Gergiev and the Mariinsky orchestra and chorus were really excellent. We can feel that they understand that music very well. The colors of the orchestra were magnificent.

But I think that on this night, Anna owned the stage and as a consequence she had the more cheerful applauses. The team was granted a real standing ovation and bravi (not a "false" as during the premiere, where they upped the curtain while people were standing to leave). When they brought flowers for the singers, Gergiev as usual gave his bouquet to Anna, who finally threw them to the musiciens in the pitch. Unfortunately, I think that one of them didn't see the bouquet coming, because Anna started to smile and laugh quite embarassed and shameful and made a sign of apologize before returning to her place. That was really funny.

After the performance she signed autographs, posed for pictures with fans and chatted a little bit with some of them before going to the party organized for the cast.

A shame that there will not be a dvd of this production!!!

"Aleko" and "Iolanta", Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Baden-Baden 24. July 2009

The third performance of Rachmaninov's first opera "Aleko", with John Relyea in the title role, and Tchaikovsky's last opera "Iolanta", with Anna Netrebko in the title role and Piotr Beczala as Graf Vaudemont, took place on Friday 24. July 2009 at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Valery Gergiev conducted the Chorus and Orchestra of the Mariinsky Orchestra of St. Petersburg. The stage director, in a co-production by the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, was Mariusz Treliński. One more performance of "Aleko" and "Iolanta", the last one of the run, is scheduled on 27. July 2009.

The cast for this third performance was almost the same one than for the two previous performances, being the only changes Irina Mataeva replacing Veronika Dzhioeva as Zemfira in "Aleko" and Mikhail Kit replacing Sergei Aleksashkin as King René and Alexander Gergalov replacing Edem Umerov as Ebn-Hakia in "Iolanta".

What can I tell you but: Another triumph for Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczala!

The third performance of Iolanta at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden was sold out again, and it was cheered by an enthusiastic audience.

Anna sang and played the story of the princess who is unaware of her blindness and then is cured and she did it so convincingly that she must have moved everybody in the audience. It was simply overwhelming when Iolanta began to see the colours and forms created by nature for the first time in her life.

Polish tenor Piotr Beczala (Count Vaudemont) and Russian baritone Alexey Markov (Robert) also received applause during the performance for their arias. But the undisputed highlight was the duet of Iolanta and Vaudemont, Tvoyo molèan ye neponyatno (I do not understand your silence), which I have never heard any better before. It makes a big difference whether you listen to it in a concert or on CD, or if you see and hear it as an acted scene in a complete opera. The audience began to cheer and applaud even before the final tones of the music had finished (the orchestra of the Marinsky Theatre under Valery Gergiev was excellent and so was the acoustics of the Festpielhaus).

After the finale there was a rising storm of applause for the chorus, the principal singers and for Gergiev, but the house almost exploded when Anna came out for her last curtain call. Everybody rose and gave her standing ovations.

As always, she thanked not only those in the orchestra stalls near the stage but also the people in the galleries high under the roof, in the heavens , to whom she waved with her both arms.

There was a moment of scare and also of laughter when the curtain moved down in the same second when the singers wanted to step forward to the orchestra pit one more time, but nobody was hurt and the curtain went up again.

After the show a large crowd gathered at the stage door. When Anna came down the steps an official led her across the red carpet to the restaurant opposite where she was greeted with applause when entering. Piotr Beczala followed her and said that they would come back immediately. And so it was! Only a few minutes later Anna returned, wearing a red dress and holding a large bouquet of flowers in her arms. She signed many programmes and pictures, smiled when photos were taken, and then she waved good-bye and moved towards a car waiting for her leaving a happy crowd behind who had had a memorable summer night in Baden-Baden.

This morning, while I was waiting at the train station, I saw Ukrainian bass Mikhail Kit together with his wife (?) and some colleagues. I asked him if he was King René, and he smiled and answered in his deep voice: Yes, that s me. And then he signed my programme.
