Anna Netrebko will make her debut in Barcelona as Iolanta in Jan 2013

The star soprano Anna Netrebko will make her eagerly awaited debut at the Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona singing the title role of Tchaikovsky's Iolanta in January 2013. Valery Gergiev will conduct the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater. Two concert version performances are scheduled on 10. and 13. Jan 2013.

Anna Netrebko attended the Carnegie Hall Gala 2011

Anna Netrebko attended last Wednesday the Carnegie Hall Gala 2011.

In the opening night, Yo-Yo Ma and Valery Gergiev with the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater performed an all-Russian program.

The Dinner Gala was at the Waldorf Astoria.

Anna Netrebko was accompanied by her sister Natasha.

Anna Netrebko made her debut at the Carnegie Hall in a memorable concert with Dmitri Hvorostovsky on 30. May 2007.

Her first piano solo recital at the Carnegie Hall will take place on 26. Oct 2011. The program is fully devoted to Russian composers Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov aand Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky and Ms Netrebko will be accompanied at the piano by Elena Bashkirova. Check out the Carnegie Hall website for further details of the program.

Deutsche Grammophon releases the album "Anna Netrebko - Live at the Metropolitan Opera".

The CD, which will be released on 16. Sep 2011, includes works by Prokofiev, Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Gounod, Offenbach and Puccini.

Anna Netrebko sings with top opera singers such as Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Juan Diego Florez, Roberto Alagna, Joseph Calleja and Piotr Beczala.

Valery Gerviev, Sylvain Cambreling, Placido Domingo and James Levine conduct the Metroplitan Opera Orchestra.

Live At The Met features excerpts from live performances on the Met stage from La Boheme, Don Giovanni, War &Peace, I Puritani, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Romeo etJuliette, Don Pasquale and Lucia di Lammermoor.

Anna Netrebko will perform at the Carnegie Hall's 2011-2012 season

BroadwayWorld reports that Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director, announced today Carnegie Hall's 2011-2012 season, consisting of 180 performances. Mr. Gillinson announced details of the new season-including plans to celebrate Carnegie Hall's 120th anniversary-at a press conference.

Carnegie Hall will launch its 2011-2012 season on October 5 with its Opening Night Gala concert featuring the Mariinsky Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Valery Gergiev. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma will join the orchestra for a program to include Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Maestro Gergiev and the orchestra will present four additional concerts in October, performing a complete Tchaikovsky symphony cycle as well as music by some of Tchaikovsky's successors, paying tribute to the legendary Russian composer who made his American debut conducting at Carnegie Hall's inaugural Opening Night on May 5, 1891.

As part of Carnegie Hall's season-long 120th anniversary celebration, soprano Anna Netrebko will give a recital on Wednesday 26. October 2011 at 8 PM.

CNN International: Anna Netrebko Revealed

On 17. November 2010 at 08:30 AM (GMT) CNN International has premiered "Anna Netrebko: Revealed"
a 23-minute long documentary about the Russian superstar soprano Anna Netrebko.

The awesome documentary is splitted into three parts and it can be seen at the CNN International website.

The first part "Anna Netrebko: The modern face of Opera" starts with Anna Netrebko in New York in October 2010. She is leaving her new appartment, located just a few blocks away from Lincoln Center, going walking to the Met. Anna is rehearsing the revival of Otto Schenk's production of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale". The film shows Anna Netrebko, Mariusz Kwiecien and John Del Carlo rehearsing backstage some scenes of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" under the precise and detailed direction of Otto Schenk.The fist part concludes with some nice images of a very young Anna in Krasnodar, some of her early performances at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and a short interview with Maestro Valery Gergiev.

The second part "Anna Netrebko: Diva turned mother" starts with Anna Netrebko in London in June 2010. She is singing the title role of a new production of Massenet's "Manon" at the Royal Opera House. The film shows Anna arriving at the stage door of the Royal Opera House and warming up the voice at her dressing room. It includes footage from her current performances of Massenet's "Manon" at the Royal Opera House and Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" at the Salzburger Festspiele 2010. The film show us also Anna as a mother, playing with her cute son Tiago or cooking at her new appartment in New York. Some other really nice moments are when Anna is refreshing some scenes of Bellini's "I Puritani" at the piano and Tiago is around there "playing" also the piano.

The third part "On stage with Anna Netrebko" starts with Anna Netrebko in Baden-Baden in July 2010. She is in a recording session of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" with Marianna Pizzolato and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under the musical direction of maestro Antonio Pappano. This recording will be released by Deutsche Grammophon in March 2011. The film reveals the cover of this upcoming CD and includes also some images of a funny photo session with Anna and Marianna held in London in June 2010. After Baden-Baden and London, the film drive us back to New York in October 2010 to show us some on-stage rehearsals and the opening of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" at the Met.

This is another treasure! A videoclip from a historical performance of Bizet's "Carmen" at the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg in 1997, starring Elena Obraztsova in the title role, Viktor Lutsyuk as Don Jose, Anna Netrebko as Micaela, Alexander Morozov as Escamillo, Olga Trifonova as Frasquita, Maria Gorzevskaya as Mercedes, Leonid Zakhozhaev as Remendado, Vladimir Samsonov as Dancairo and Alexander Gergalov as Morales. Valery Gergiev conducted the Chorus and Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater.

This was the last performance of Elena Obraztsova as Carmen at the Mariinsky Theater and she broke her left hand during a scene of the 3rd act. Vladimir Samsonov runned behind the scenes to call a doctor. After a pause, Elena Obraztsova returned to the stage to sing her role till the end of the performance.

The XVIII Music Festival “Stars of the White Nights” opened on 21. May 2010. One of the main highlights of the Festival was the performance of Bizet's "Carmen" at the Mariinsky Theater on 23. May 2010, starring Anna Netrebko as Micaela and Massimo Giordano, making his Mariinsky Theater debut, as Don José. The production, with a Don José dressed as a German Nazi officer, was directed by Alexei Stepanyuk. Tugan Sokhiev conducted the Chorus and Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater.

Incognita. This is the name of the last movie, the third of a trilogy, directed by Mikhail Pandoursky. Anna Netrebko and Valery Gergiev will play the roles of the mother, an opera singer, and the father of Anton Horn, a composer and director of an opera house who is working on a great musical work about the myth of Prometheus. Pandoursky has just one days time to work with Anna Netrebko. It will be this summer at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. And he knows exactly what he wants from her: a song without words, a pure vocalise recording.

Yesterday, 4. March 2010, the Mariinsky Opera and Orchestra with special guest Anna Netrebko and Valery Gergiev conducting, performed in "An Evening of Tchaikovsky Operas Scenes in Concert". The programme included scenes from Mazeppa, The Queen of Spades and Iolanta.

Our blogfriend Howard and his wife Paula attended this concert performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Howard has kindly written the following report for the blog:

My wife Paula and I, were treated to a thrilling evening of the Mariinsky orchestra, chorus and solists conducted by Valery Gergiev. It indeed was a very special 60th birthday present that I will chersih. The opera house at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC is a beautiful and intimate hall overlooking the Potomic River that is generally reserved for the Kennedy Center Awards and the Washingon Opera Company led by Placido Domingo. In this 2 year cultural exchange with Russia, the Mariinsky Theater showcased its star talent. One quickly apprecites how the Russians have embraced and nurtured culture and music. Gergiev and Netrebko have elevated the bar to a very high standard and deserve much acclaim and accolades.

We treated ourselves to orchestra seats (5th row center) about 20 feet from the stage and it was worth every moment of this indulgence. The orchestra led by Gergiev was stylish, well-honed and provided an exquisite ensemble. The stage was crowded with orchestra and full chorus. The orchestra was in full formal attire and the chorus had matching couture including scarves for the women. Gergiev conducts to precision without a baton using only his fingers to nuance color from the orchestra. It was full drama from the outset with outstanding brass and percussion sections. One only has to imagine the string section all in unison with piannisimo staccato that sounded like rain drops falling in unision. The sound was just heavenly. This is a much more intimate setting than the Metropolitan opera which commands a great and expansive presence.

While I will not attempt to review the entire concert which was just truly spectacular, I will devote some time to the evening's culmination with Iolanta. Ms Netrebko arrived in a gorgeous aqua gown cinched at her left waist and flaired at the bottom The bodice was wrapped tightly and adorned with silver sequins and a simple elegance. From the moment she walked on stage you sensed the frightened look of an adolescent blind girl who has never experienced love. Her uncanny ability to act was truly amazing. Her blank stare, expressions of fright and tears only added to the mystique when she sang alongside the tenor. The awakening of both passion at love by this young girl who did not understand the meaning of light was very intimate. This was the birth of a budding initial romance. Aside from impassioned singing and charasmatic charm, you had to witness the transformation in her persona to understand how Anna has viewed her craft and art form. She has truly melded impassioned singing with a deeper understanding and portayal of her role. As has been stated in a very simplistic cliches, she is a stage animal ruling the enviroment. This does not even come close to the passion, talent and ability that she has developed in recent years. It has been said that singing in your native language is the epitome of your talent and this was certainly true. This opera, Iolantta is melodious, full of passion and drama and true to Tschaikovsky art form. Anna's singing was passionate, elegant and befitting for the role. She made you feel that she was in the opera rather than a staged performance. I cannot stress the color and resonance of her voice which was far superior to her outstanding counterparts from the rest of the performance. Russia has developed significant talents and depth in orchestral, ballet and opera and Ms. Netrebko has indeed become the cultural ambassador of the world showcasing this talent.

Returning to the scene from Iolanta, Ms. Netrebko sang with fierce personality, drama and changed her intensity and vocal strucure from a shy reclusive adolecent to a passionate and dramatic lover discovering companionship and true romance. The transformation from a shy, reticent and frail girl into a first sensuous love was dramatic and effective. A frightened blind glance evolved into a radient dramatic style and embrace. It was remarkable to behold. Her last nights were in a high register soaring with intensity, confidence and reminiscent of her now iconic Salzburg Traviata. My wife kept commenting how different she looked from her dying role in La Bohème. The scene ended with Anna in passionate embrace kissing her newly found lover. Netrebko's hands speak for themselves. They reflect elegance, sensuality and style. It was indeed a very memorable and wonderful performace that I will cherish for a long time. It concluded with a rousing standing ovation. As you can imagine the audience was filled with many Russian expatriots who truly appreciate the arts. We met people from the Washington, DC area who had also seen the recent La Bohème at the Met and were astonished by her capabilities.

The curtain calls were numerous to a boisterous crowd and Anna waived with her signature waive that is now known to her many admirers.

Anna Netrebko returns to USA

After a stunning concert with Dmitri Hvorostovsky at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 18. January 2010, a pretty much unnoticed performance of La Bohème at the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg on 21. Jan 2010 and her appearance at the 2009 German Media Award in Baden-Baden on 9. February 2010, Anna Netrebko returns to the United States of America for a series of performances of La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, with Anna Netrebko as Mimi and Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo, starting on 20. February and running till 20. March 2010, and an Evening of Tchaikovsky Opera’s Scenes in Concert, with the Mariinksy Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on 4. March 2010.

Anna Netrebko's debut at the Met in 1998

One often reads that Anna Netrebko made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera of New York in Prokofiev's War and Peace in 2002. In fact, it was not like that, as Anna made her debut at the Met in a Kirov Opera Gala Concert on 23. April 1998, opening the Kirov Opera Festival. Valery Gergiev conducted the Kirov Opera Chorus, Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Kirov Orchestra. Anna Netrebko sang the Lyudmila's Cavatina from Glinka's "Ruslan and Lyudmila".

Within this 1998 Kirov Opera Festival at the Met, Anna Netrebko sang also the role of Louisa in "Betrothal in a Monastery", conducted by Valery Gergiev, on 25. April and 2. and 9. May 1998 and the role of Lyudmila in "Ruslan and Lyudmila", conducted by Alexander Titov, on 29. April and 8. May 1998. Anna Netrebko at the annual benefit dinner for the White Nights Foundation

The annual benefit dinner for the White Nights Foundation took place at the Four Seasons restaurant last night, on 9. Dec 2009. The Mariinsky’s artistic director, Valery Gergiev, flew in to attend the dinner, flying out the next morning.

The evening included performances by Russian musicians, like opera singers Anna Netrebko and Ekaterina Gubanova, each of whom took solos and then together sang a selection from Offenbach's “Les Contes d'Hoffmann”, the opera that they are currently singing at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Valery Gergiev, Anna Netrebko and Alexei Markov among the winners of the Golden Sofit theatre prize

The awards ceremony for the Golden Sofit, St Petersburg’s most prestigious theatre prize, takes place every autumn at the opening of the new theatre season and sums up the previous theatre year. This ceremony was the fifteenth to be held.

Anna Netrebko has received an award for the title role of John Doyle's production of Lucia di Lammermoor, which was premiered on 14. January 2009 in St. Petersburg.

The young baritone Alexei Markov won the award for his rendition of the role of Robert in Mariusz Treliński’s production of the opera Iolanta.

The Special Prize of the Expert Council for the Revival of the Leningrad Traditions of the Laboratory of Contemporary Opera went to Valery Gergiev.
